A single significant storm reverses all three conditions in a matter of hours. Scottsdale adds a layer that most other Phoenix metro cities don’t face at the same scale: a dense network of drip irrigation systems and landscaped yards that continue supplying moisture long after storm runoff drains away. That irrigation-extended moisture keeps soil damp, maintains water in low-lying areas, and sustains pest pressure well into fall, even in years with a short or early-ending monsoon window.
The Pests Arizona Homeowners Should Watch For
Three categories account for most of the urgent calls we receive in Scottsdale during and after monsoon storms. They’re triggered by the same environmental shift but create different risks and require different responses.
Mosquitoes
Under Arizona’s summer temperatures, mosquito larvae can develop into biting adults in roughly 7 to 10 days. That means a new generation can complete its cycle between storms from water sources as small as a clogged gutter or a plant saucer left on the back patio. Populations build quickly once conditions align, and in Scottsdale, those conditions arrive on a nearly weekly basis during peak monsoon months.
Desert Subterranean Termites
The desert subterranean termite (Heterotermes aureus) is the most destructive termite species in Arizona and one of the most active following monsoon rainfall. Two mosquito species are responsible for most of the health concern in Scottsdale. Culex quinquefasciatus, the southern house mosquito, is the primary carrier of West Nile virus in Arizona. West Nile virus doesn’t produce obvious symptoms in roughly 4 out of 5 people who are infected. About 1 in 150 infections causes severe neurological disease, including encephalitis or meningitis. Older adults and people with underlying health conditions face the highest risk of serious illness. There’s no vaccine and no specific antiviral treatment, which makes prevention the only meaningful defense.
Where Mosquitoes Breed & Rest Around Scottsdale Homes
Any water source that persists for roughly a week can support a complete mosquito breeding cycle. In Scottsdale yards, that list is longer than most homeowners expect.
Common breeding sites include:
- Birdbaths and ornamental water features that aren’t circulated or treated
- Plant saucers and pot trays that collect water after rain or irrigation

Weather stripping, door sweeps, and caulk around pipe penetrations address multiple pest threats at once.
Know the Limits of DIY Approaches
Property cleanup and sealing reduce habitat and access, but they rarely clear an established population during peak monsoon months.
